About

The program originated at the freshman level as early as 1919 and expanded to include upperclassmen in 1927. With the introduction of the House system in the early 1930's, the program continued to develop and evolve in order to meet the interests of generations of Harvard students. Now the House Intramural Athletics program provides competitive participation for the members of the thirteen Houses: Adams, Cabot, Currier, Dudley, Dunster, Eliot, Kirkland, Leverett, Lowell, Mather, Pforzheimer, Quincy and Winthrop. Each year, over 1,500 contests are scheduled in approximately 32 different sport leagues or special events. Points are awarded at the end of each season and the Straus Cup is presented to the first place House in May.

For more information on becoming a referee, click here.

League sports are scored through the regular season - 20 points per victory 10 per loss and 0 per forfeit. Negative 15 points for default (not letting anyone know). Placement points for playoff games (variable). Special events scored separately - the winner gets 50 points. Points every week for someone from your house showing up to IM council meeting. For further details on points, please review the House Intramural Sports Handbook.

You must be affiliated with a house and cannot be a “current” varsity athlete for that sport. Example: varsity basketball player cannot play IM basketball (however, can play IM soccer). Adults/graduates cannot participate if they were previously a four-year varsity athlete. Varsity athletes should confirm with coaches before joining.

Reach out to your previous house rep, house administrators, or the head refs on how to apply to become a House IM rep.

Mention it in your IM council weekly meetings or mention it to house rep so they can bring it to the head ref’s attention.
