Harvard Kendo Club Marks a Milestone with the Triumphant Conclusion of Shoryuhai, the Premier Intercollegiate Kendo Tournament

United Through Tradition and Competition: Shoryuhai’s Success

In a testament to the enduring spirit of martial arts and community, the Harvard Kendo Club, operating under Harvard Recreation, is thrilled to announce the conclusion of this year's Shoryuhai tournament. This landmark event, celebrated as the largest intercollegiate kendo competition of its kind in the United States, has once again outdone itself by drawing in over 180 participants this year.

The tournament unfolded over the last weekend of spring break, culminating a week of intense preparation and camaraderie among the members of the Harvard Kendo Club (HRKC). From a retreat in Maine filled with team-building activities to the meticulous planning and execution of the tournament, every moment led to the strengthening of bonds within the club and the broader kendo community.

Highlights of Shoryuhai included the integration of participants of various ranks in matches, offering a unique and inclusive competitive experience. The presence of highly respected sensei, or judges, from Japan provided invaluable learning opportunities, reinforcing the tournament's mission. The involvement of HRKC alumni and the global kendo community underscored the deep bonds formed through the sport, with many returning annually to support the event.

Reflecting on the tournament, Roxy Cumming, President of the Harvard Kendo Club, shared their profound connection to the event and its community. "I love Shoryuhai because it reminds me of one of the main reasons I stuck with the kendo club in the first place: the people," Cumming states. "The camaraderie experienced during Shoryuhai, where every waking hour is spent in the company of our members, is truly my favorite time of the semester," Cumming adds. This sense of community extends to the competition itself, where matches are not separated by rank, allowing for dynamic and exciting battles that showcase the sport's vibrancy and the athletes' dedication.

In addition to the competitive matches, the event featured "goodwill keiko" sessions, where participants had the rare chance to spar with the tournament's judges, further enhancing their skills and understanding of kendo. These sessions, along with the tournament's various social and cultural gatherings, emphasized the event's role in promoting not just physical prowess but also personal growth and friendship.

As the echoes of Shoryuhai fade into memories, the Harvard Kendo Club looks forward to the future, where the spirit of kendo continues to inspire and unite. This year's success lays the groundwork for even more vibrant gatherings in the years to come, solidifying Shoryuhai's place as a cornerstone event in the world of kendo. The club extends its deepest gratitude to all participants, alumni, and sensei, whose contributions have once again demonstrated the powerful bond of the kendo community. Together, we continue to forge a legacy of excellence, camaraderie, and enduring spirit!
