Welcome to the Harvard University Graduate Intramural Sports Program. We are proud to have established this entity as an opportunity for graduate students to engage in intramural sports, which we believe are of the utmost importance to student physical and mental wellbeing. Competitive and recreational athletics are an integral part of the educational process and experience. Students should have opportunities to participate and compete as appropriate to their interests and skills. Harvard values the lessons that have long been taught by athletic participation: the pursuit of excellence through personal development and teamwork; ethical and responsible behavior on the field and off; adherence to the spirit of rules as well as to their letter; leadership and strength of character; and sportsmanship – including respect for one's opponents, acceptance of victory with humility, acknowledgment of defeat with grace.  In teaching these lessons to its students, Harvard instills habits that will lead students to better and healthier lives. While winning is not an end, we believe that the efforts by our intercollegiate teams to be their best will lead them to success.
Athletics participation is a way for students to grow, learn and enjoy themselves, and to use and develop their personal, physical and intellectual skills. The entire Department works to achieve these goals, to honor the values of the University and its respective Graduate and Professional Schools. Â We at Harvard University believe that a comprehensive athletics program provides physical, social and emotional benefits that are vitally important in a highly competitive educational environment. Since the number of students who can compete at the intercollegiate level is limited, an extensive program of intramural sports was first developed at the Undergraduate level at Harvard College. Drawing from the same rationale and philosophy, the twelve Graduate and Professional Schools, under the leadership of FAS Athletics, and in partnership with the Office of the Provost, the Deans of Students, and the Harvard Graduate Council (HGC), the first-ever Graduate Intramurals Sports Committee (GISC) was convened in 2022 to create and support a University-wide program for all graduate and professional students.
The Graduate Intramurals Program provides recreational and physical activity participation for the students of Harvard's Graduate and Professional Schools. Everyone is welcome and will be included. The GRADUATE INTRAMURALS SPORTS COMMITTEE (GISC) is composed of up to three commissioners (paid positions), and committee representatives (members) from all participating graduate schools. Each school can elect or appoint a representative, who may be assisted by others in their School. The committee members and commissioners have immediate responsibility for carrying out the intramural program in their respective schools, and they work closely with their school's office of student affairs.
