Harvard Ice Hockey Club Wins Ivy
Championship
For the first time in history the Brown, Harvard, Penn, and
Princeton gathered to crown an Ivy Club Champion. The Crimson
traveled to Providence to play the first of the Preliminary games.
Our boys meant business, pulling out to a 2-0 lead and finishing
the Bears off 9-4. Next up was a trip to Pennsauken, PA where
the Crimson outmatched the Princeton Tigers 13-3 and punched their
ticket to the championship game at the historic Hobey Baker Rink in
Princeton, NJ. Brown's victory over Penn gave them the
advantage over the Quakers in the head-to-head tiebreaker as both
finished 1-1. The Bears were prepared for the offensive power
of the Crimson this time, holding the good guys to a 0-0 tie after
the first. In the second, with the Brown Taekwondo Team now
cheering on their comrades, the Bears struck first. The lead
was short lived as senior defenseman Joe Smith, who flew down from
Boston just for the championship game, answered with a clapper from
just inside the blue line. Heath MacLean tipped the
scoreboard in Harvard's favor later in the second and Kylie
Stephens stood strong in net, keeping the Bears to their one goal.
Nic Brickley would add some insurance with a powerplay goal
in the third and Ryan Byrnes put the nail in the coffin, finding
the empty net and sealing the 4-1 victory and Harvard's claim to
the 1st Ivy Club Championship. The Crimson finished their
second season as a club program 10-6-2 against fellow ACHA-D2 teams
and 10-9-2 overall.
The club team would like to extend its gratitude to all of its
supporters for another great season. A special thanks to the
rink guys, Chris and Joe, and to Jeremy Gibson, Duane Reeves, Gary
Brown, Scott Anderson, Casey Blodget and everyone in the Athletic
Department for their help all season long.
