PEDOMINATION
THE ALL-HARVARD CHALLENGE
HOW MANY STEPS WILL IT TAKE FOR YOU TO WIN?
**********************************
PROGRAM DETAILS:
Pedomination challenges you (and your co-workers, colleagues
and classmates) to take as many steps as you can between to win
some fabulous prizes! Take advantage of the beautiful summer
weather, get outside, tie up those laces and walk to work, skip to
school, take a Step class at the MAC or Hemenway or walk along the
river….every step you take adds up! So get outside, get
moving, and win some great prizes! This program is offered each
summer. Information about the next session will be available later
this spring.
What: Teams of 4-6
members compete to accrue steps, tracked with a pedometer (these
can be purchased at CitiSports; smart phones also have APPS for
this). Members submit step totals each Monday (submitted by team
captains by 6pm on each Monday of the competition).
When: Registration forms will be available later
this spring.
How: Recruit a team
of 4-6 Harvard affiliates. A team captain must be chosen for each
team. Individuals who register will be placed on a team of other
individual registrants. Purchase a pedometer or use your iPhone
pedometer APP to track your steps daily. You can find some
affordable pedometers online at: Target.com, Amazon.com and
Walmart.com. Local stores like City Sports and Eastern Mountain
Sports also carry them.
Other details: Steps may be logged anywhere, at
any time. Steps may be counted during any activity, such as:
running, walking, Zumba, Step aerobics...and even while on
vacation!
Pedometer Details:
Follow the instructions on your pedometer regarding setting,
placement, etc. Be careful not to accidentally reset your pedometer
mid-week. Do not shake your pedometer to run up your totals.
According to personal preference, track each day’s total
(starting at 0 each day) or keep your pedometer running all week
long.
Counting Steps:
Steps are submitted on the honor system: weekly limit of 99,999
steps. Unfortunately, you may not log steps while biking,
whether on a stationery bike or a regular bike (we are planning a
separate bike mileage contest in the future!). We recommend that
each member keep a log of his or her daily step totals (see
attached example or download from website) in case of inadvertent
reset. Please note that we advise participants to avoid using
extremely cheap pedometers due to unreliability and the tendency
to reset.)
Official Weekly
Steps Log
*Use the 'Official Weekly Steps
Log' to keep a tally of your daily steps, or keep your pedometer
running all week long and make a note of your final (Monday-Sunday)
steps.
Prizes: The weekly
rankings will be posted online on Tuesdays. Prizes will be awarded
to the Top 10 teams as well as the top Male & Female
Pedominators!

PEDOMINATION is partnering with Harvard's CommuterChoice Program
Walk to Work Days take place twice a year in
the Spring and Fall. Enjoy food, raffle prizes, and conversing with
fellow walkers. Click here for more information. Look for dates
of upcoming walks on posters at Transportation Kiosks around
campus, articles in HR publications or at their web site: http://www.commuterchoice.harvard.edu/
Can’t walk the entire distance to work? Walk partway from
a nearby bus or subway stop.
Discover your campus using the “Harvard Walks Map” and add steps to your
Pedomination Challenge (5 minute increments are approximately a
half mile). Measure the time and/or distance of your walk
& learn about destinations for food, errands and other
attractions by using the “Harvard Walks Map” and add steps to your
daily Pedomination Challenge.
