TEAM FITNESS CHALLENGE
(TFC) 2012 IS HERE!!
HOW IT
WORKS
Teams
of 6-8 Harvard affiliates compete to accrue workout minutes in our
facilities (MAC and Hemenway only this year)
between
Monday, February 6th and
Friday, March 9th, 2012 (for a total of
5 weeks).
TFC team members must be current
Harvard affiliates with valid athletic access; members are
responsible to keep access current and will not be admitted without
a valid, swiping Harvard ID.
Individuals who do not have a team
can fill out an individual registration form. These people will be
put onto a team with other individuals who do not have a team. A
team captain will be selected from these individuals; please
indicate on the individual registration form as to whether
you’d like to be a team captain.
REGISTRATION
Registration for TFC 2012 is from
1/23-2/1. Registration forms can be printed from this web site or
obtained at the MAC or Hemenway. Registrations forms can be turned
in at either facility; they are due no later than
February 1, 2012.

LOGGING YOUR FITNESS
MINUTES
This year, the team captains will be
responsible for keeping track of and entering the teams’
minutes into a Google form/document. The link to the Google form
will be emailed to the team captains and it will be available for
completion on Mondays from 12pm-5pm. Instructions on how to
complete the form will be listed on the top of the form.
The team captains are the contacts
for each team. All correspondence and minutes logging must be handled
through the team captain. In the event that the team captain is
absent or on vacation during a day that the minutes need to be
turned in, a substitute team captain can step in. You must notify
the TFC committee contacts (see below) prior to this change.
VACATION AND NON-HARVARD TFC
MINUTES
Since the rules state that a TFC
team member must swipe into a facility in order for his/her TFC
minutes to count, we cannot accept minutes from a TFC team member
while he/she is on vacation.
PRIZES
Prizes will be awarded to the top 3
TFC teams (determined using the “adjusted minutes”
which averages the points per team member and calculates based on a
team maximum of 8 participants).
This year, we are awarding raffle
prizes on a weekly basis for Bonus Workouts. Team members can fill
out a raffle form at the front desk of either facility each time
they come to the gym and participate in a Bonus Workout class
(limit one per person, per day, per facility) to win a weekly
prize. Raffle prizes will be awarded on the Monday following the
weekly Bonus Workout. The winners will be contacted via email and
prizes can be picked up at the facility where the raffle form was
dropped of. Please be sure to include the following information on
your raffle form: your name, your team’s name, your email
address, your phone #. Invalid or illegible raffle tickets will be
considered null and void. Raffle prizes and Bonus Workouts will
start the week of February 12th.
At the end of the competition, a
raffle prize will also be awarded to a team captain. The TFC
committee will select the winner via a random drawing.
BASIC RULES
- Team captains are responsible for entering the teams’
weekly minutes. Team captains must log each team members’
daily totals on the Google form each Monday by 5pm (minutes may NOT be
backdated).
- Members may work out more than once daily, and may work out at
both the MAC and Hemenway. Eligible daily workout minutes
may not exceed 90 minutes, as we do not wish to
encourage excessive exercise habits. However, since some people
practice endurance sports (such as long-distance running, cycling,
or swimming), once a week a 180 minute workout is eligible,
provided that it is followed by a "day off."
- Runners and walkers may count minutes outside the facility
provided that they start their routes at the MAC or Hemenway
(you must swipe
in at the gym prior to going for your run or walk for it to count
as TFC minutes).
- We encourage all participants to keep track of their own
minutes to double-check our record keeping. Although we will rely
largely on the honor system, we will be randomly checking minute
submissions against our computerized check-in times.
- Please be detailed in your tracking of your TFC minutes (for
instance, if all of the teams start entering the weekly max of 630
minutes, we will know that the minute logging is not accurate
and/or true.
- Please be pecise in your tallying of bonus minutes. Bonus
minutes must be logged separately from the regular minutes (please
see details below).
TFC runs for 5 weeks, from 2/6-3/9.
The weeks will be split from each Monday, starting at noon and
ending at noon. For instance, week 1 will start at noon on Monday,
2/6 and it will end on Monday, 2/13 (at which point week 2 will
start), and so on. Weekly standings will be posted on the Wednesday
of each week (i.e., 2/15, 2/22, 2/29, and so on).
The winners will be announced the
week of 3/12-3/16. Prizes will be distributed in March/April
2012.
BONUS MINUTES
Bonus points (“minutes”)
will be based on attendance of weekly bonus classes (to be
determined by the TFC committee and announced via email, posters
and the TFC web site). Each bonus class is worth 55 points (in
other words, the length of the class). The minutes will be logged
in the Google form each week, but in a separate category. When team
members submit minutes to their captains, they should keep regular
minutes separate from bonus minutes to avoid confusion.
The bonus workouts for Week 2
(2/13-2/19) are:
*For the MAC: Attend any Aqua class and receive a raffle ticket
which will be filled out and entered for the weekly prize.
*For Hemenway: Attend any 7:15am group exercise class and
receive a raffle ticket which will be filled out and entered for
the weekly prize.
POINTS
All of the weekly team points will
be “adjusted” based on the number of people in each
team to account for the fact that smaller teams with more people
accruing points would count just as much as a larger team with
people on it that do not log any minutes. Only
“adjusted” and not accrued fitness minutes will be
posted each week and at the end of the competition. The Excel
spreadsheet tallying the fitness points will have an equation to
calculate these totals.
Individuals that attain the American
College of Sports Medicine standard physical activity goal (180
minutes per person per week) will also be recognized.

rule-related TFC-related questions to Kerry Smith at ptrainer@fas.harvard.edu or
