Specialty Classes

During each semester we also offer progressive Specialty classes, with each week's instruction building on the prior classes. These classes include  Belly Dance, Bollywood Dance, Hip Hop, Meditation, Ice skating, Scuba Diving, Swim Programs, Fit Mamas, Ballet, Salsa, BOSU Equilibrium & many more offerings that are listed below.

Due to the specialized subject matter, smaller size and more intensive focus of the instructor, there is a fee for all members to attend these classes. Non-MAC or Hemenway members are eligible to participate only as the partner of a Harvard affiliate in classes requiring a partner. Specialty classes are offered at the beginning of each semester; schedules will be posted in the weeks preceding the sign-up period. Please note: purchasing specialty class access does not grant you facility access. Facility access (membership) must be purchased through the ticket office. REGISTRATION INFORMATION:  Payment is due upon registration.  Early registration is encouraged as space is limited. There is a $10.00 late fee for all registrations on and after July 5t,h assuming space is still available. Course fees cannot be prorated.  Refunds are granted at the discretion of the Management and only prior to the registration deadline (7/5).  Otherwise credit may be applied toward another Recreation program or service.  Minimum of 10 participants required to offer each course. Register early to avoid class cancelation due to low enrollment.

Hemenway Descriptions:

Ballet for the Complete Beginner: Have you ever wanted to take ballet, but thought it was too late to start? This class offers a basic ballet class for the absolute beginner of any age and level of dance experience. We will focus on basic ballet positions and vocabulary, while paying special attention to posture, core strength, and body control.  Beginning with exercises at the ballet barre, we will build an understanding of the movement behind the ballet art form and complete a full class that will consist of short center floor exercises as well as traveling combinations across the floor. This class is for the complete beginner—no shoes, leotards, or tights are required; however comfortable, form-fitting clothing (i.e. yoga pants, T-shirt or tank top) is preferred. Ballet for the Returning Dancer: Designed for those with some previous dance experience, this class is for the student wishing to begin dancing again. A gentle reintroduction to a full ballet class, we'll focus on reviewing positions, work on flexibility, strength and balance, and will progress through a complete ballet barre to do some center floor work.  The pace of this class will be a bit quicker than the basic beginner course, and the class will focus on brushing up on the basics as well as learning new steps. No extensive ballet knowledge is assumed, just a general comfort level with basic positions and class format. Belly Dance Level 1: Discover the art of Belly dance. This class is for everyone who wants to learn this beautiful dance and get a cardio workout and all over body toning. You will learn body isolations and graceful rhythmic movements from fast and fiery hip-work, shimmies, and locks to slow and sensual snake arms, camels, belly rolls, figure eights and more. Each class will build upon the next as you learn movements and short combinations. Benefits include: increased strength and fluidity throughout the boy along with improved posture and cardio vascular health. Wear comfortable workout clothes and no shoes or soft soled dance shoes. Extreme Bootcamp: Get your day started with this fast-paced, action-packed, high-energy class that combines sports drills with resistance training. This class requires no previous training and will challenge beginners as well as push even the most advanced to the maximum. The class includes flexibility, plyometrics, abdominals, agility training, core strengthening, short distance jogging, sprints, and overall conditioning. It’s like a double shot of espresso! HIP/HOP MTV Dance: Come and learn the most popular dance moves from current recording artists including Lady Gaga, Beyonce & more! This is a continuous movement class that is a high-energy mix of hip-hop, MTV style dance moves and a few splashes of jazz.  Some dance experience is helpful but not necessary. NIA: Nia is the ultimate “love your body workout” that stimulates and integrates your body, mind and spirit. Nia combines dance, martial arts, and yoga with hot music, physical conditioning and mindfulness, in a playful environment that encourages sensory awareness and fosters self-expression. This Nia series will teach you to increase strength, flexibility, balance, and endurance at a pace that is perfectly suited for YOUR body, while feeling GOOD and having FUN!

Operation Strappy Dress: Do you want to shed those extra pounds and get those arms toned and ready for your little black dress? Join this class and we will get you ready to rock your strappy dress diva style. Whether you want to feel confident on a first date, at an upcoming wedding or special event, this is the class for you. This class Will give you a program to target all the essential areas and leave everyone else jealous of your little strappy dress! Yoga for Pain and Injury Relief: Are you tired of back pain and aching joints, or recovering from an injury? Learn how to bring fresh oxygen, blood, and nerve energy into your painful areas while you release tensions from the body that may be keeping you from performing at your fullest. In this 8 week class we will learn how to access and relax hardened muscles that have been used to stabilize any injury or imbalance through the body. Yoga can reduce your body's tension in reaction to pain or injury, and provide an opportunity to "move through" the pain instead of resisting it. We will strengthen the body through standing poses; open the hips, shoulders, and back, use breathing exercises, meditation training, and relaxation to help release unnecessary tension in the body.  Pilates Mat Fundamentals - the Secret Weapon
Great for those looking to enhance physical potential, or to simply prevent injury & increase fitness & enjoyment of physical activity. Strengthen the key "powerhouse" postural muscles while engaging the entire body for an energizing, but gentle & gradual increase in postural fitness & body awareness. If you feel something is missing in your exercise program, or find yourself cycling between periods of activity & less activity or minor injury, this may be the solution. If you already know Pilates & core work is making the difference for you, join us & increase your mastery. We use a variety of small props, including Bosus & rings.   Pilates With Bosus & Balls - Advanced-&-Advancing (Intermediate) CANCELED DUE TO LOW ENROLLMENT.  Level Take it to your personal next level & get deeper into your core body workout as you increase the balance challenge. Using the best of the latest tools for the mat workout, we build on existing core strength & proprioceptive awareness, expanding that inner glow dynamically in three dimensions with lengthening, sculpting & integrative work from the Pilates playbook of an experienced teacher. PRE & Post Strolling  Fit-Mama's -  This class is designed for the Pre & Post natal mom.  It's hard being pregnant and also getting back to a routine with a little one around, so you have the option to bring your little one while working out (children should be stroller age).  Whether this class is to get you in shape for your new bundle to arrive, an escape from your little one or spending time with your baby, this class is the perfect option!   There will be intervals (modifications for pre-natal moms) along with strength & conditioning techniques to make every “mama” feel better & stronger.   Having the support of other “mama’s” and working out, will give you MORE energy for your little one.  A stroller is not required unless you bring your baby.  This class will meet both in/ outdoors (weather permitting).  
NOTE: If you are pre-natal or less than 11 weeks post you will need to have a waver signed by your Dr. before 1st class.  Dates:  Tuesday February 14-April 10.  (No class March 13th.) Time:  1:15-2:10 pm.  Instructor:  Kate Doherty

HIP HOP -Designed to be fun, educational, mind opening and a great workout!  Through a combination of hip-hop, funk, break dancing moves, and a wide variety of music, we will explore the origins of hip-hop, where it is today and where it is going in the future.  With a flexible class structure, this class is for individuals with all levels of dance experience.   Dates:  Thursdays February 16-April 12.  (No class March 15th.)  Time:  7:05 - 8:00 pm  Instructor:  Katie Egan

Social Dance Classes:

Please note, NEW THIS SEMESTER:  you do not need to sign up with a partner in order to enroll for Ballroom Dance or Latin Dance classes! 


Ballroom Dance-   Do you have a wedding, reunion or special event approaching?  This class offers skills in fox trot & tango.  Participants will learn to lead & follow a variety of steps, rhythms & tempos that will lend themselves nicely to any social dance occasion.  For beginner & intermediate dancers.  Dates:  Tuesdays, February 14-April 10.  (No class March 13th.)  Time:  8:00-8:55 pm.   Instructor:  Richard Downey                                                  

Latin Dance (SALSA/TANGO)  1-
In this class participants will learn the basic steps, turns & rhythm of Salsa.  Tango is introduced to enhance leading & following skills & give balance between the more reflexive Salsa & more responsive Tango.  This class will accommodate both beginner & intermediate.  Dates:  Thursdays February 16-April 12.  (No class March 15th).  Time:  8:30-9:25 pm.  Instructor:  Richard Downey                   



Latin Dance (SALSA/TANGO)  2-
The quick, reflexive movements of Salsa & the more deliberate responsive movements of tango, offer two great disciplines to aspire too!  This intermediate level class is for those who have taken Salsa/Tango & wish to refine their skills & enhance their confidence on the dance floor.   Dates:  Tuesdays, February 14-April 10.  (No class March 13th.)  Time:  9:00-9:55 pm.  Instructor:  Richard Downey

Harvard Ice Skating Classes - See you in October 2012!

General Overview:  Our classes provide a unique experience in a fun and relaxed environment.  The Beginner (Level 1) and Intermediate (Level 2) Classes are designed to build on one another and are open to both Hockey and Figure Skaters.  Beyond this level, the Hockey (Level 3) and Advanced Figure Skating (Level 3) Classes provide specialized training unique to each discipline.              

Please note that Skates are required.  Rental skates will not be provided.
If you are not sure which class would suit your skating skill level or have questions about where to purchase or sharpen skates, please contact Maggie Brothers at magsbros1@mac.com.        

Beginner Classes (Level 1):  This class is designed to develop basic strength and coordination.  Skaters will learn forward and backward skating skills, turning, and stopping.  The focus of this class is to comfortably build a foundation upon which skaters can move on to the Intermediate Classes (Level 2).


Intermediate Classes (Level 2):  This class is designed to build upon the skills acquired in the Beginner class (Level 1).  Skaters will learn forward & backward crossovers, edges on a circle, turning on one foot, and beginning patterns of US Figure Skating’s “Moves In the Field”. The focus in this class is to increase the edge quality and control. 
Prerequisite: completion of Beginner (Level 1) or similar class.

Advanced Figure Skating Class (Level 3): This class is designed to introduce the beginning patterns in U.S. Figure Skating’s “Moves In The Field”.  Skaters can expect to also learn basic jumping and spinning techniques.  The focus of this class will be edge control and power.
Prerequisite:  Completion or current enrollment in Intermediate (Level 2) Class.  
 

Hockey Class (Level 3): This class is geared toward skaters who already have a solid skating foundation.  Skaters should be comfortable working on forward and backward crossovers.  The focus of this class will be improving edge quality and control while increasing balance, coordination, and agility. 
Prerequisite:  Completion or current enrollment in Intermediate (Level 2) Class.
