2010-11 COOP Harvard Athlete of the Week
The COOP Athlete of the Week is awarded to the Harvard athlete
who turns out a stellar individual performance in the past week.
The award goes to athletes who score multiple goals or the
game-winner, put up unreal statistics, play a huge role in the
Crimson victory, break school records or show their athletic
prowess doing what they do best, winning.

Freshman Alexandra Kiefer has been selected as the COOP Athlete
of the Week for March 28, 2011, after capturing the NCAA Fencing
Championship in the women’s foil event. Kiefer tallied 18
wins over the two-day round-robin portion of the event. She notched
103 recorded touches and a +42 scoring index to enter the medal
round as the No. 2 seed. In her semifinal match, Kiefer earned a
tough 15-12 victory over Evgeniya Kipicheva of St. John’s to
advance to the Championship bout. In the final, Kiefer jumped out
to a commanding 10-4 lead on Princeton’s Eve Levin and never
looked backed. Kiefer would score the clinching touch with 14
seconds remaining on the clock and win the national championship,
15-7. This is the third individual fencing title for Harvard since
the 2005 season.

After helping the Crimson to wins over Holy Cross and Brown by
stopping a total of 25 shots, while only allowing 11 goals, Harry
Krieger has been selected as the COOP Athlete of the Week for March
21, 2011. On Tuesday, Krieger faced 16 Holy Cross’ shots and
stopped 12 of them as the Crimson cruised to a 10-4 victory.
Krieger did not allow a Crusaders goal over the final 44:55 of the
game. In Harvard’s Ivy League opener Saturday, Krieger turned
away 13-of-20 shots as Harvard downed Brown, 11-7. Krieger’s
.694 save percentage in Harvard’s two victories last week
pushed his season save percentage to .500 with a win percentage of
.833, having started all six games of Harvard’s 5-1 start to
the 2011 campaign.

Harvard earned three victories, while dropping only one game
over the weekend at the UC Riverside tournament, led by senior
co-captain Ellen Macadam who went 8-for-15 over the weekend,
crossed the plate six times for the Crimson and drove in three more
runs. For her efforts, Macadam has been selected as the COOP
Athlete of the Week for March 14, 2011. In the first two games of
the tournament, Macadam scored a run in each as Harvard downed UC
Riverside, 7-4, and St. Louis, 2-1. Macadam bat lit up in the third
game as she went 3-for-4 with a triple, scored three runs, and
stole home in Harvard’s 6-1 win over North Dakota. She
repeated her 3-for-4 effort at the plate Sunday against St. Louis,
driving in three runs, slamming a home run, and scoring another
run. Through the first nine games of Harvard’s 6-3 start,
Macadam in batting .515 and slugging .909 with three home runs and
six RBI.

Following a weekend in which he recorded back-to-back
double-doubles in two wins that helped Harvard secure a share of
its first ever Ivy League title in men’s basketball, Brandyn
Curry has been selected as COOP Athlete of the Week for March 7,
2011. During the Crimson’s 79-64 victory over Penn Friday,
Curry contributed 13 points on 3-of-5 shooting from the field,
while going a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line. But it was
the 14 assists, a new career-high for Curry that stole the show.
Curry followed Friday’s effort with another double-double
Saturday in Harvard’s 79-67 win over Princeton to ensure a
share of the program’s first Ancient Eight title. Curry
dished out 10 more assists, while adding 10 points on 4-of-6
shooting. Curry finished the weekend with a 4-to-1
assist-to-turnover ratio.

Senior Kate Mills captured the career high point swimmer at the
Ivy League Championship, while also winning two events to earn COOP
Athlete of the Week honors for Feb. 28. Mills compiled 330 points
over four years at the Ivy Championship and was honored in a
post-meet ceremony, garnering career high swimmer accolades. The
award goes to the senior who scored the most point over her career
at the event. She also contributed to the Crimson’s
second-place finish at the event, winning two races. As an
individual, Mills took home first in the 400-yard Individual Medley
and was a member of the 800 freestyle relay team that captured
first. She also placed second in the 200 butterfly and as a part of
the 400 freestyle relay team, to go along with a third in the 200
IM.

Danny Biega registered seven points on three key goals and four
assists in a 2-1-0 week for the Crimson to earn COOP Athlete of the
Week honors for Feb. 21. He scored the game-winning goal to break a
3-3 tie in the third period Friday at Cornell and also logged two
assists in the win. He also had three points, including the tying
goal with 4:03 left to play, in Harvard’s 5-4 comeback win
against No. 15 Boston University Monday at the Beanpot. Biega gave
Harvard a first-period lead with his goal Saturday at Colgate. The
tally moved him into ties for first place among ECAC defensemen in
league goals (eight) and league points (19). Four of Biega’s
seven points in the week came on the power play, and one came
shorthanded.

Michael Raynis went 12-3, earned first-team All-Ivy League
honors and clinched the Ivy League title for the Crimson, earning
COOP Athlete of the Week honors for Feb. 14. With the Ivy League
Championship tied at 13 against Yale, Raynis squared off against
Peter Cohen. The matches was tied at four touches apiece with 16
seconds left when Raynis scored on Cohen to give Harvard the
Ancient Eight title. Raynis was part of the Crimson’s epee
squad that went 5-0 on the weekend. His personal 12-3 record over
the weekend was the second best in the entire event.

After scoring 17 points and eight assists in back-to-back games
against Princeton and Penn, Brogan Berry has been selected as the
COOP Athlete of the Week for Feb. 7. Berry tallied her 17 points
against the Tigers on 7-of-10 shooting, while dishing out eight
helpers. She also grabbed four rebounds in the win that put Harvard
atop the Ivy League standings by itself. Berry followed that
performance with an identical 17-point, eight-assist game in
Harvard’s double-overtime game against Penn. She went 4-of-7
from the field and 9-of-12 from the free-throw line. Berry also
snagged six boards and ensured Harvard would remain unbeaten in the
Ivy League at 5-0. Berry leads the Crimson in points per game,
averaging 14.4. Her 16 assists moved her into sixth place on
Harvard’s all-time list. She is now 45 points shy of
1,000.

After sweeping the one- and three-meter boards, and helping the
Crimson capture wins over Princeton and Yale at the HYP meet,
sophomore Michael Stanton has been selected as the COOP Athlete of
the Week for Jan. 31. Stanton helped Harvard jump out to an early
lead as he won the three-meter competition with a score of 336.05.
He would follow that with a dominant performance on the one-meter
board, earning the victory and the sweep with a score of 305.8.
Stanton’s wins helped the Crimson defeat Princeton and Yale
to complete an undefeated regular season in the Ivy League. It is
the first time since the 2007-08 season that Harvard finished the
season 7-0 against Ancient Eight opponents.

Alexandra Kiefer went 15-0 in the foil, including a victory over
2008 Olympian and two-time national champion Doris Willette of Penn
State, at the St. John's Super Cup to earn COOP Athlete of the Week
honors for the week of Jan. 24. Kiefer, along with the other
members of the Harvard foil squad, led the third-ranked Crimson to
a 2-3 record Sunday, beating defending national champion No. 2 Penn
State for the second time this season, 15-12, and the host No. 5
Red Storm, 16-11.

Walter Peppelman won all three of his matches, including a
victory over the sixth ranked wrestler in the country, at the Lone
Star Duals to earn COOP Athlete of the Week honors for the week of
Jan. 17. Peppelman, No. 11 in the country at 157, tallied wins over
wrestlers from Appalachian State, Stanford and Oklahoma. He won
each match by bonus points, including a dominating 17-0 victory
over Chase Nelson, the No. 6 wrestler in the country at 157 lbs.
from Oklahoma. Peppelman leads the Crimson with 16 wins this
season.

Michael Biega recorded a natural hat trick to rally the Harvard
men’s hockey team from a two-goal deficit against Brown
Friday night to earn COOP Athlete of the Week honors for Jan. 10,
2011. The Bears took a 2-0 lead eight minutes into the second
period. Biega then scored the games next three goals, all in the
second period. Just 32 seconds after Brown’s second goal,
Biega blasted a one-timer over the Bears goalie’s shoulder to
get the Crimson within one. Just 76 seconds later, Biega found the
back of the net again on an Alex Killorn feed and tied the game at
2-2. Biega’s third goal came on the power play when he scored
on a rebound from the bottom of the right circle. The hat trick was
the second of his career. Biega also added an assist in
Saturday’s game against No. 1 Yale and finished the weekend
with a +1 rating. He is currently second on the team in scoring
with 11 points and six goals.

Victoria Lippert scored a season-high 22 points on Thursday and
followed that up with a 17-point performance on Sunday to earn COOP
Athlete of the Week honors for Jan. 3, 2011. Lippert led all
scorers in the Crimson’s loss to Dayton on Thursday. She also
grabbed four rebounds and dished out four assists, a career-high,
in the game. Harvard bounced back with a victory over Massachusetts
on Sunday with Lippert dropping 17 points on 7-of-16 shooting from
the field, including three 3-pointers. She also grabbed six boards,
dished out two assists, tallied one steal and rejected one UMass
shot. Lippert is currently second on the team with scoring at 13.5
points per game and third on the team in shooting percentage,
converting 52.2 percent of her attempts. She leads the Crimson in
3-point percentage, making 45.2 percent of her attempts from behind
the arc.

In a week in which he dropped 17 and 18 points in back-to-back
Harvard wins, Christian Webster has been selected as the COOP
Athlete of the Week for Dec. 13. In a 69-54 victory over WPI
Tuesday, Webster netted 17 points, including 10-for-10 from the
free throw line. Webster also contributed two rebounds, two steals
and one assist in the Crimson’s win. Webster followed that
performance by leading all Harvard scorers with 18 points in an
87-71 downing of local rival Boston University. He knocked down
two3-pointers and went 8-for-10 from the charity stripe. Webster
also grabbed five boards, dished out three assists and secured a
steal, helping the Crimson improve to 7-2 overall, and 5-0 at home
this season.

After breaking two school records at the Georgia Invitational,
Meghan Leddy has been selected as the COOP Athlete of the Week for
Dec. 6. Leddy first broke the 100-yard backstroke record, posting a
time of 55.18, eclipsing the previous school mark by .05. During
the next day of competition, Leddy set the school mark in the
200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:55.60, good for fourth overall
at the meet. Leddy surpassed the school record in the event that
she set last year by 1.81 seconds.

After a week in which he scored 24 and 19 points to help Harvard
secure two victories, Keith Wright has been selected as the COOP
Athlete of the Week for Nov. 29. In a midweek matchup at Bryant,
Wright lit up the scorebook with 24 points, a career-high, and 10
boards. He also assisted on Christian Webster’s game-winning
three-pointer over the Bulldogs. Wright followed that performance
with 19 points, nine rebounds, six assists and three blocks as the
Crimson toppled Colorado on Sunday. The victory is the first for
Harvard over a BCS opponent at home since Dec. 1, 2007, when
Harvard beat Michigan. Wright already has two double-doubles this
season and leads all Crimson scorers, averaging 17.2 points per
game. Wright also leads Harvard in rebounds per game, tallying 8.8
per contest and blocks, swatting away 10 shots already this
season.

After tying the Harvard single-game record for tackles in a
game, Nick Hasselberg has been selected as the COOP Athlete of the
Week for Nov. 22. Hasselberg, playing in his final game for the
Crimson, recorded 10 tackles in each half to total 20 against
archrival Yale and tie Isaiah Kacybenski ’00, who
accomplished the feat twice in 1999 (Colgate, Fordham). One of
Hasselberg’s most important tackles came on a Yale
fourth-and-one from the Harvard 10. Hasselberg and teammate
Alexander Norman broke through the offensive line to drop Yale
running back Morecai Cargill for a one-yard loss and keep the score
tied at 7-7. Hasselberg also added a quarterback hurry to his stat
line from The Game. He finishes the season tied as team leader in
tackles with Collin Zych. Both finished their senior seasons with
79. Hasselberg also had two sacks, five tackles for losses and
three pass breakups on the season.

Following a third-place finish at the 2010 NCAA Northeast
Regional Meet, Daniel Chenoweth has been selected as the COOP
Athlete of the Week for Nov. 15. Chenoweth paced the Crimson
runners with a time of 29:51.2 on the 10k course at Hammonasett
Beach State Park. In a meet featuring 229 runners, Chenoweth
finished just 14 seconds behind the meet winner and three seconds
behind the second-place finisher. This marks the fourth time this
season that Chenoweth has finished in the top three, including a
win at the dual meet against Yale and a runner-up finish at the
Heptagonal Championship. Chenoweth has also been selected as one of
four runners from the Northeast region to compete in the NCAA
Championships on Nov. 22 at Terre Haute, Ind. This will be the
third time he competes at the NCAA Championships.

Kyle Richter earned his sixth career shutout Saturday against
Renssalaer and has been selected COOP Athlete of the Week for Nov.
8. Richter stopped 52 of the 54 shots to come his way in the first
two games of the season. The Crimson need each of his 19 saves in
Saturday’s 1-0 shutout of No. 18 Rensselaer, a game that was
tied at 0-0 for 59 minutes and 51 seconds. Richter was perhaps even
better Friday, making 33 saves to hold No. 15 Union’s
high-powered offense in check and giving Harvard a chance to win in
an eventual 2-1 loss. One of his two goals against came from
Union’s top-ranked power play. The big weekend gave Richter
the early Division I lead in save percentage (.963) and
goals-against average (.963).

Liza Ryabkina scored three goals in the first two games on the
season for Harvard and has garnered COOP Athlete of the Week honors
for Nov. 1. In the season-opening rivalry game against Yale,
Ryabkina scored the Crimson’s second and third goals, both
knotting the score. The game-tying-goal came with 14 seconds left
in the third period on a blue line to blue line pass from Leanna
Coskren where Ryabkina took it to the left point and fired in the
equalizer. Midway through the second period Saturday, in Harvard's
4-2 win over Brown, Ryabkina one-timed a pass from Kaitlin Spurling
to give the Crimson a 2-0 lead over the Bears. On the weekend,
Ryabkina registered a +1 rating.

After a career rushing day against Princeton, Gino Gordon has
been selected as the COOP Athlete of the Week for Oct. 25. Gordon
rushed for a career-high 204 yards on 20 carries (10.2 ypc) in the
Crimson’s 45-28 defeat of the Tigers. Gordon wasted no time
tallying the yards as his first carry of the game went for 56.
Gordon evened the score, 7-7, in the first quarter on a 26-yard
touchdown scamper that capped a four-play, 94-yard Crimson scoring
drive. Gordon would finish the first half with 134 yards on nine
carries. Gordon also caught four balls for 30 yards in the game.
His 234 all-purpose yards accounted for just over 40 percent of
Harvard’s 583 total yards of offense in the game. The senior
currently leads the Crimson with 711 rushing yards and is averaging
an Ivy League best 7.8 yards per carry this season.

After a week in which he was recognized by US Sailing as the
Sailor of the Week, Alan Palmer helped the Crimson capture the
Captain Hurst Bowl, earning him COOP Athlete of the Week honors.
Skippering all 14 races in the A division, Palmer’s led the
Crimson to seven top-three finishes, totaling 80 points, tops in
the division. Harvard won the 20-team intersectional regatta thanks
to the consistent sailing and low scoring registered by Palmer and
his boat mates, Ryan Byrne and Quincy Bock. The victory at the
Captain Hurst Bowl is the third this fall in which Palmer has been
sailing for Harvard.

After leading her team to two Ivy League victories this past
week, Taylor Docter, of the women’s volleyball team, has been
selected as the COOP Athlete of the Week. Docter propelled the
Crimson to a come-from-behind win over Columbia Friday night,
tallying a team-leading 17 kills, just one shy of her career high.
She also added five clutch service aces and four digs to her stat
line. Docter continued her solid play in Saturday’s home
defeat of Cornell, leading Harvard with 13 kills. She also
contributed two blocks and six digs in that match. Docter is
currently the team leader in kills (122), kills per set (2.14),
points (149.5), points per set (2.6) and service aces (18). She is
also second on the team in digs, registering 111 this season.

Following a ninth-place finish at the Wisconsin Adidas
Invitational on Saturday, Claire Richardson has been selected as
the COOP Athlete of the Week for Oct. 4. In a field of 202 runners
and 20 teams, six of which are currently nationally ranked by the
United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches
Association, Richardson raced to a ninth-place finish, helping
Harvard secure sixth as a team. Richardson’s time of 20:27.5
was only 14 seconds behind the meet’s top finisher and six
seconds back of a top-five finish. Of the eight runners finishing
in front of Richardson, six are competitors from nationally ranked
schools. This is Richardson’s second top-10 performance of
the season after capturing second at the H-Y-P meet on September
24.

After a three goal and seven-point weekend, Melanie Baskind of
the women’s soccer team has been selected as the COOP Athlete
of the Week and the Ivy League Player of the Week for Sept. 27.
Though the Crimson fell 4-3 at Penn Friday, Baskind scored twice,
the first goal put Harvard up, 2-1, and the second evened the score
at three. In continuing her solid play, Baskind would strike again
on Sunday against UMass redirecting a cross from Elizabeth Weisman
into the back of the net. The goal would stand as the gamewinner
for the Crimson who is currently 3-4-1. Baskind also tallied an
assist on Katherine Sheeleigh’s goal that put Harvard up 1-0.
Baskind currently leads the team with five goals this season and is
second in points with 11, one behind Sheeleigh. She is also
currently only one of three Crimson to start all eight games this
season.

Katherine Sheeleigh netted the game-winning goal Friday to give
the Crimson a victory over Rhode Island. The goal came just
38-seconds after URI had knotted the game at one. Sheeleigh
dribbled the ball into URI territory and fired a shot that found
the back of the net to swing the momentum back in Harvard’s
favor. Due to Sheeleigh’s goal, Harvard went 1-1-0 this week.
Sheeleigh, a senior co-captain, currently leads the team with six
points this season, two assists and two goals, both of which were
game-winners. She has started four games this season and also leads
the team in shots taken with 23.

Men’s water polo senior co-captain Bret Voith had a solid
weekend in the pool at the Princeton Invitational, leading the
Crimson to thrilling, 9-8, win over George Washington and near
upsets of nationally-ranked Cal Baptist and Princeton. Voith
totaled five goals, four assists and five steals in four games over
the weekend, including three goals against No. 18 Princeton in the
Tigers’ home pool Saturday night in a televised game. Voith
tallied one goal, an assist and three takeaways in Harvard’s
9-8 win against George Washington Sunday afternoon to close out the
tournament.

Rogers gave the 10th-ranked Harvard men’s soccer team the
lead for good in each of its two victories on the season’s
opening weekend. His tie-breaking tally in the 80th minute of
Saturday’s opener against No. 13 Stanford secured a 2-1 win
in head coach Carl Junot’s first game at the helm and sent
the crowd of 3,221 fans home happy. Rogers helped Harvard take
control in Monday’s win at Massachusetts by scoring in the
fourth minute of the second half to break another 1-1 tie.
